Let's Get To The Bottom Of Acne
Acne vulgaris (or simply acne) is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans. Nearly 85% of people have acne at some point in their lives.
While acne is common, people affected by the condition can often find it frustrating and difficult to understand, especially if it progresses into adulthood. In fact, according to one survey, close to 75% of women living with acne say they will never understand why they have the condition and 76% say they get frustrated when they see or even think about their acne.
Additionally, 1 in 3 women are embarrassed to speak with their dermatologist about their acne because they believe “it’s supposed to be a teen issue.” As a person suffering from adult acne, I understand the frustration. So when I went to an event hosted by ACZONE® Gel I asked their experts: Dr. Doris Day and celebrity makeup artist Julianne Kaye; for their top tops on dealing with adult acne.
Q&A With Dr. Doris Day
What are the common causes of acne?
Acne is a skin condition characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed red pimples. Acne occurs when pores become clogged. Each pore is an opening to a canal called a follicle, which contains a hair and an oil gland. Normally the oil gland secretes oil near the bottom of the follicle that moves up the hair shaft to lubricate the hair and skin. As these natural oils move up the follicle, they help remove debris, including old skin cells. When glands produce too much oil, the pores can become blocked, accumulating dirt, debris, and bacteria: this combination of conditions can often lead to acne.
What skincare ingredients should people look for or avoid when treating acne?
Avoid heavier, petrolatum based products. Also, benzoyl peroxide, which is found in some acne products, may bleach hair and fabrics, like clothes or furniture, but ACZONE® Gel won’t.
Even once you find the right treatment, working your beauty and makeup routine around your acne can be stressful. So we asked celebrity makeup artist Julianne Kaye for her top tips and some of the hottest fall trends.
Q&A With Julianne Kaye
How do you cover a zit?
I dab a little powder before and after I apply concealer to any blemishes. It helps the concealer stay in place and creates a smoother texture.
Everyone is obsessed with contouring. What are some way to highlight your best features?
For a subtle look, highlight your cheeks and the bridge of your nose with a luminizer to hold on to summer glow a bit longer.
What are your favorite products and tools for keeping skin from looking oily?
Before starting your makeup, make sure your brushes are clean. They should be cleaned once a week because they can collect oil, dirt and even bacteria, which can clog your pores.
