Hispanic Heritage Nail Art Inspired by #SinTraducción
I celebrate Hispanic Heritage throughout the year. Here on EverSoPopular I have interviewed many highly accomplished Latinos including: Hollywood’s brightest stars, music’s favorite hit makers, fashion’s biggest trend setters and other trailblazers.
This year I have partnered with Target on the #SinTraducción campaign to celebrate in a more personal way.
#SinTraducción is all about embracing the words in Spanish that simply have no direct translation in English, and how these words and moments are unique Latino culture.
This year my focus is on social media and working to help make the world of social media an inclusive space for Latinos.
This year it’s all about 1 word, actually 1 letter: ñ. The Eñe is basically the one letter Hispanics have that English speakers don’t hence the #SinTraduccion.
I’ve been a supporter of Project Enye and helping to have twitter to recognize and use the Ñ, including in Twitter handles, would facilitate a more pluralistic social media conversation, both within the United States, and among multilingual Latin@ users throughout Latin America. With the Ñ as my inspiration I wanted to create nail art that is a nod to the language of so many.
To reflect that I went to Target to get some products to make a beautiful statement.
If you love the look of nail art and have ever tried to recreate cool art you know its not easy (unless you are a highly skilled nail tech). You can still make a statement by making your own custom design appliques. It's easy and virtually mistake proof. Here are my tips for goof proof nail art.
What you need:
Base coat
Top coat
A few colors of nail polish
Nail polish remover
Q-tips and Cotton pads
Nail file
Clear plastic baggie
I picked up some fun nail products at Target including colors and tools from OPI, Kiss and Orly.
Directions
Step 1: Paint
Using topcoat paint rectangles on a plastic bag. Keep in mind the size of your own nails and the design you want to create. Scale is important if its a big design make sure it will fit on your nail. Allow the first coat to dry (about 5-7min) then apply a second coat.
Step 2: Design
Create your desired design. Here I went simple drawing out my ñ in a complementary color.
Step 3: Dry
Any nail expert will tell you how important dry time is. Make sure you wait and let the polish completely dry.
Step 4: Prep Art
It's important that your nail stickers are completely dry for this step. Carefully peel them off the plastic with tweezers.
Step 5: Polish
Apply a color or a clear base coat to your nails.
Step 6: Apply Your Art
Before your base coat is dry, press on your new nail sticker.
Step 7: File and shape
Trim off the excess parts of the nail sticker to fit your nail and then file to neaten up edges.
Step 8: Finish
Once your nail sticker has been applied, seal with top coat.
