Backstage Beauty: DKNY Shows Us What The Cool Girls Will Be Wearing For Fall 2016 (UPDATE)
“We just want to have fun”, creative directors, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne already announced in the collection accompanying press release and explained that they were inspired by the street style fashion of the 90s – especially by the sexy and self-confident girl bands of that time.Taken as a whole, the collctionpresents itself in dark, combined with bright white and lush red, as it is typical for the 90s. With this urban uniforms, the models stroll around the early 90s’ New York: With red checked maxi coat and a white blouse, they amble past the shop windows, are on the way to a meeting, wearing a masculine and casual pinstripe suit, drape themselves in a shiny voluminous ensemble that has a casual hip hop style when going for a walk to the Central Park, and glam up for a club visit with a silky spaghetti strapped dress in flame red. Even when wearing these elegant outfits, bulky black ties are worn.
Just as Donna Karan did, the creative directors play with logos, such as with “Don’t Knock New York” or a sassy “Insert Logo Here”.
The models have a nude makeup, the hair is mostly lose and appears to be undone; beauties with tighter textures rock and afro.
While backstage we also got detail on these cool nails we spotted on the runway!
Dr. Jart+ partnered with DKNY for the FW '16 show as the official skincare sponsor. The brand's new spring launches prepped the models' skin before heading into the makeup chair.
First, the Dermaclear Micro Water was applied to remove makeup and excess oil. The new Liftra Collection was then used to prep the skin for makeup application by helping to sculpt and contour while boosting facial elasticity.
As model's run around town for back-to-back shows in the winter weather, their skin can become dry. To help hydrate and restore moisture, the Brightening Infusion Prescriptment Mask was applied to the face and left on for 5 minutes. Lastly, the new Water Drop Hydrating Moisturizer (launching May 2016) was applied providing an instant dewy finish to the skin's surface.
Next up, nails! Sally Hansen is the exclusive nail partner for DKNY and to create the nail looks for the Fall 2016 fashion show during New York Fashion Week. “We wanted a playful look that mixes it up with a graphic design and tones from the 90's,” explained Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, DKNY Creative Directors.
Beauty Insipration
“When I think of DKNY, I think of the cool inspiration of the 90's, the color palette of black, gray, white, neutrals, and strong graphic shapes. I knew the nails needed to feel equally sharp. The girls each have their own personality, a variety of hair styles and thus, a variety of nail styles as well. Using two colors, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Dark Hue-mor, a deep navy and Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Commander in Chic, a muddy gray-purple, we created four different nail looks which will be randomly applied to the girls backstage. Every girl will have a unique combination of flare.” – Madeline Poole, Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador
What is for sure is that this retro collection was not only fun for Chow and Osborne; the audience loves this trip back to the 90s, too!
