"Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce" star Lisa Edelstein stopped by Amazon’s live stream fashion and beauty show Style Code Live to discuss writing an episode for the new season premiering on January 11th, working with Carrie Fisher, her style rules and more.

ON GGTD GETTING RENEWED FOR SEASONS 4 AND 5 BEFORE SEASON 3 AIRS

Yes, it’s such a blessing. This never happens. We’re shooting seasons 3, 4 and 5 in a row so we’re all exhausted but it’s been amazing.

ON WRITING EPISODE 3 OF THIS SEASON

I didn’t have total control [of where the episode would go]. It’s still a group thing. You go into the writer’s room and they’re planning the big arc. They’re planning the arcs per season and then the arcs per episode. There’s sort of a white board where they plant all the scenes for each act and then you go off and you write what everyone sort of came to as the story. [laughs] Like no one talks but Abby. Beau Garrett, I just think you look so beautiful with your mouth closed, don’t speak. That’s not true, I think she looks beautiful always. But everybody speaks in the episode I wrote and they say wonderful things. Actually, it was really exciting to write jokes and speeches that I knew these women could do incredibly well, because I knew their voices. Season 3 of any show is always more mature in that way, you’ve sort of settled in.

ON WORKING WITH CARRIE FISHER, WHO PLAYED ABBY’S EDITOR ON GGTD

Carrie is like, she’s one of those people who was so smart and so sharp that it was both exciting, terrifying and hilarious at the same time. But the other thing about Carrie was that she was so incredibly open about her life and her own personal tragedies and her own struggles. Because I knew her socially, there was always an assumption that I knew more about her than I actually know. So I was always sort of catching up to what she was talking about. But she was amazing. She was in our pilot, the whole crew got so excited to have her there. And then she was also in our second season - it was while she was shooting Star Wars, and you could see that Star Wars was a very exhausting experience for her. She was so excited about it but it was wearing on her, just physically. So it was a very different Carrie the second time. She’ll be missed, she was an incredible creature.

ON HER STYLE RULES

I love a jumpsuit as long as you don’t take your vagina for a walk. That’s what you need to say to yourself. Ruffles are all about placement. I’ve put on some beautiful shirts by very well-known designers you would approve of, but the ruffles just ended up looking like armpit skin because they were in the wrong place for my body, because I’m narrow.
