5 Tips for Cultivating Joy in Your Home
In a world where our busy lives can cause stress and upset, our homes should offer a peaceful refuge. Returning home after a hectic day of work, family, and other responsibilities can bring a sense of relief, especially if your house is a warm and serene space where you can find contentment and happiness. We spoke with Stacy Garcia, Designer and CEO of Stacy Garcia, Inc., to get her tips on how to create a sanctuary in your home. Let these five tips be the starting point to transforming your home into a source of joy.
1. Be conscious about the “things” you keep in your surroundings. The items that are in our homes and the items that we surround ourselves with have a certain energy level that can either bring you down or lift you up. It’s important to get rid of items that don’t serve you while highlighting those that do. Things like a keepsake from a loved one or a souvenir you found on a favorite trip are likely to spark joy whenever you see them, while items that feel like relics from a past part of your life or things that you held onto only because they were gifts aren’t going to make you happy. So, take a conscious audit of what’s in your home: go around and look at and touch all of your things and decide if they reflect who you are today, who you want to be, and if they make you happy. If they don’t, donate them and pass the blessing of those items on to someone else.
2. Pay attention to lighting. Lighting is known to impact our emotions, so it’s essential to consider what type of lighting you have in your home. Especially during the winter, when lighting is low and the days are short, it’s important to get in as much light as possible. Whenever possible, let the sunshine in and try to maximize natural light: layer with shears, open the drapes, and open the windows. It’s also important to incorporate different lighting elements to increase the warmth and brightness in your home.
3. Bring the outdoors in. Plants are wonderful for raising our moods. Bringing living things from the outdoors into our homes strongly impacts our surroundings. Plants cleanse the air, lift energy, and create a sense of joy in a home. If you don’t have much green thumb, try treating yourself to fresh flowers instead. Buy them for your home once or twice a month, and you’ll instantly enjoy the lift of beauty and the energy of nature.
4. Consider a spot for meditation or prayer. A quiet and clutter-free space where you can pray, meditate, or sit peacefully can go a long way to raising the vibrations in your home. It doesn’t have to be a whole room; it can be as small as a little corner, just a place where you feel peace. Having a space where you can allow yourself a few minutes of reflection every day can boost your energy level and create that sense of calm and joy in your home.
5. Think proactively about the way you live in your space. Living intentionally is a big key to feeling joy in our homes. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not paying enough attention to their spaces and how the design and organization of those spaces can help them become more functional. In a bedroom, for example, it’s crucial to create a sense of calm so you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep and ultimately start each day from a more intentional and healthful place. Be sure to clear the clutter in your bedroom, tidy it up before you go to sleep, and get rid of items that are not necessary to prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep. Waking up refreshed and ready to go is a great way to kick off a joyful day!
