Getting Nailed: The Blondes S/S 2014
One of the highlights of New York Fashion Week is The Blondes Runway Show. The design duo always brings it…theater, drama and fashion. Not familiar? I bet you are, The Blondes designs are worn on stage by top international performers: Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Fergie, Kylie Minogue, Nikki Minaj, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and Adam Lambert to name a few!
Last season I had the pleasure of going backstage and seeing the show. This seasons inspiration was simply the most iconic blondes of all time. Phillipe and David reasoned that ‘Tweety Bird’ was the original that started it all, followed by other dynamic blondes including Barbarella, The Bionic woman, Madonna, Marilyn and more.
The collection of both theatrical and wearable avante-garde designs was out of this world with futuristic references accenting the dynamic duo’s elevated art.
The nails were like precious jewels from another universe. They were whimsical, refined and pretty. Backstage was a carefully curated ‘art show’ of tiny masterpieces, each created specifically to accent a unique look.
The highlights included a royal blue-rimmed crystal clear windowed nail, hinged to a bionic base of intricate gears and toggles; a graphic interpretation of Tweety’s flirtatious eyes; and a circuit board of computer parts resembling R2D2’s central command center. This season, the elite team at the CND Design lab created FINE ART, not just ‘nail art’…..raising the bar, once again!
The CND team unveiled 36 unique nail designs today at The Blonds Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Show.
The total 864 nails took 2 days to conceptualize, followed by over 240 hours of production. (Editorial note: WHAT?!)
CND elaborated upon the theme of “The Original Blonde” and played off of the designers’ ode to historical blonde icons set in space. The clothing and nails referenced familiar blondes in art, animation and pop culture, including Tweety Bird, Marilyn Monroe and the Bionic Woman. The results of this collaboration truly push the envelope in art and exemplify nails as the ultimate fashion accessory.
“This season in New York, we decided to partner exclusively with The Blonds. We have been working with them since their inception in 2008 and they are the ultimate artists of fashion week,” said CND Co-founder, Jan Arnold. “The Blonds’ creative inspiration for this year very much fell in line with our ‘Paradise’ trend prediction, which portrays woman as an exotic bird with bright, bold nails as her ultimate adornment.”
Each of CND’s hand-crafted masterpieces embodies their unique partnership with The Blonds. This season’s avant-garde nail creations reflect the personality and history of the dynamic duo, while showcasing CND’s unrivaled artistry, inspired by other-worldly explorations in a realm of fantasy. The nails explore the paradox of strong animation set against a backdrop of iridescent neon yellow, chrome metallics and holographic teals in reptilian armor-like textures and protective spiked shapes.
“We continue to work with CND because each year the nails are more elaborate than the last. There is no other company who could understand our creative vision and interpret it the way that they do,” said The Blonds’ designers Phillipe and David Blond. “CND sets trends…they are more than just nails – they are about art and that is what makes them the perfect partner for us.”
“The Blonds allow us creative freedom like no one else,” said Jan Arnold. “The creative process is truly collaborative and the end product is pure theatrical inspiration.”
